Tucked round the corner from posh Primrose Hill's main drag, Manna is an unpretentious mix of the veggie worlds old and new. Decorated simply with wood and candles, it has a café atmosphere and the spicy scent of yer classic health food shop. Friendly staff bring international dishes in trendy stacks or with elegant dressings, quite unlike the slabs of organic goo you might have found elsewhere 20 years ago. Starters include the 'tortilla tower' (layers of spinach, red pepper and potato omelettes with melted smoked cheddar) for £6.50 and flautas - corn tortilla tacos with black refried beans and smoky tofu filling in a tangy sauce for £6.25. Main courses are Indian and Mediterranean dishes including the Majorcan baked aubergine for £11.50 and the whisky barbecue marinated grilled tofu (£12.50) which, served on garlic mash with onion rings, is comfort food of the most sophisticated order. Organic ice creams, fruit crumbles and cheeses make up much of the dessert list (prices from £3.50 to £6.75). There is a wide range of vegan and gluten-free options too. Manna never sacrifices imagination and taste in pursuit of goodness or principle. | ||||
